Matthew Phrip [Frip]

Matthew was the son of Captain John Phrip and the family owned property and slaves in the Norfolk area. Capt. John Phrip was very closely connected to Richard Brown. They used to exchange slaves and this seems to have continued between Richard and Matthew (see for example Joseph Brown). Matthew Phrip was closely connected to John Willoughby by both proximity and family and a suspect loyalist. He was cleared of being a loyalist in 1776 along with John Willoughby. In the claims for destroyed property in following the fire in Norfolk in 1775, Matthew Phrip was listed as being a ‘captain’ and a merchant in Phrip and Taylor, but also listed as a partner in Phrip and Bowdin and the amount of property he claimed was worth over 2,000 Pounds. His family intermarried with the Walke family and the Keeling family.

Evacuation of New York

  • Evacuation of New York -

    In April 1783 the first evacuation fleet left for Nova Scotia. A week later  the British Commander, Sir Guy Carleton, sailed up the Hudson River to Orangetown for a conference with General Washington to discuss the evacuation. As the victorious commander, Washington opened the meeting by reiterating the resolution of Congress regarding “the delivery of all Negroes and other property.”
